Why Do Photographers Offer Free Photoshoots?

An honest look at how free photography offers work and what customers should know before booking.

In short

Usually it’s a promotional way to introduce new people to a studio, and yes, the photographer hopes you’ll love the pictures enough to buy more. A good offer is still worthwhile even if you don’t. Before booking, check what’s included, what extras cost and whether you can happily leave with just the free picture.

A free professional photo shoot can sound too good to be true. Is it genuinely free? Is there a catch? And why would a photographer offer something that normally costs money? Those are fair questions — and worth asking before you book.

Different photographers run different businesses, so not every free offer works the same way. Here’s how I think about them, and what I’d encourage anyone to check.

Why would a photographer offer a free session?

Sometimes it’s a promotional offer designed to introduce new people to a studio. A family with a lively toddler or an excitable dog might be nervous about paying for a shoot without knowing how it will go. Taking away the session fee can make it easier to try the experience.

Is the photographer hoping I’ll buy more photographs?

Often, yes — and I think it’s better to be open about that. A photographer hopes you’ll love what they create, enjoy the experience and perhaps choose to buy additional pictures. That doesn’t have to mean any obligation or pressure. A reputable photographer will just let you decide whether you want extra pictures or not.

Why do some offers include a free picture?

A free shoot and an included photograph let customers take something away even if they decide not to buy more. At Two Front Teeth, when an offer includes one free picture, that picture is yours with our compliments, whether or not you purchase any extras. Check the exact size and format in any photographer’s offer. The good thing about getting a picture included is you know that, whatever happens, you won’t have to pay any money to get something wonderful, and if you do want extras, then that’s a bonus.

Does the photographer lose money if I don’t buy anything?

A professional session uses real time, equipment, studio space and staff. If you take only the included picture, a promotional shoot may cost the business more than it brings in. A studio accepts that risk as part of its marketing, just as another business might pay for an advert.

Why not just advertise instead?

Many photographers do both. Advertising helps people discover a studio; a promotional session lets them experience it. In my experience, that can be a much more personal introduction than seeing photographs on a screen.

Does a free offer mean the photographer isn’t busy or isn’t good?

Not necessarily. Businesses sometimes use carefully chosen promotions to introduce new services or make use of otherwise empty appointment slots. Equally, a free offer is no guarantee of quality. Judge the photographer by their work, experience, approach and transparent terms — not by the offer alone.

Will I be pressured to spend money?

You shouldn’t have to be. Some studios sell photographs after the shoot, often at a viewing appointment. That’s normal, but you should know what to expect before you book. Ask whether there is a minimum spend, whether purchasing is optional and what happens if you choose only the included photograph.

What should I check in the small print?

Look for any booking deposit, cancellation or rescheduling conditions, eligibility rules, what the free photograph includes, when and how you’ll see the images, and prices for extra photographs. Clear information should be easy to obtain before you commit.

Does a more expensive shoot guarantee better pictures?

No. Different photographers have different running costs, products, experience and styles. Price matters, but it isn’t a reliable shortcut to quality. Look at their actual photographs and choose a photographer whose work you genuinely like.

What’s the real benefit of a free shoot?

For families, it can remove some of the worry about spending money on a session when you’re not sure how your baby, children or dog will behave. For the photographer, it’s an opportunity to show what they can do and perhaps build a relationship that lasts for years.

I’ve known families who first came to us through a promotional offer and then returned for other photographs as their lives changed. But the most important thing is that the experience is worthwhile even if they never buy another picture.

A final thought

There’s nothing wrong with a free photography offer, and there’s nothing wrong with deciding it isn’t for you. The key is honesty. Find out what’s included, what extras cost and whether you can walk away happily with just the free picture. Then make the choice that suits your family and your budget.
