“We have spoken for a while about getting family portraits of us all but have put off the idea until now.
With two teenage sons who had no desire to take part in this family event it was going to be a difficult one to convince us all that we could look good in a photo together. “We had been looking for an alternative photo studio; we’d heard that high street studios could be formulaic and this prevented good communication and creativity between the photographer and the family group. We had liked the look of some of the “high street” providers but also wanted to share some ideas and come up with what we thought was our own thing.
Just at that time our friend recommended John. We went along for a shoot with our baby twins. They were a bit grumpy but as the studio was warm and comfortable with plenty of things to attract them they soon settled and started playing. John (and his wife!) were extremely patient and actually looked like they enjoyed our kids wrecking the place. We were able to try loads of ideas and also time to have a coffee and inspect what John had caught so far. After a bit of reflection we tried some different things. All really good fun. John seemed to come up with ideas that were just right having listened to what we thought we wanted. After a few days John had created a portfolio of the best ones, played with a some artistically. We went back to John’s for a proper viewing and he was able to make some standard and alternative suggestions regarding framing, mounting etc. When we had picked the file and final format of the images we added it all up. What a surprise! We were able to add in a few treats for grandparents and it still came to a lot less than the suggested pricing given by the high street. When the girls were a bit older and we returned for a second shoot. This time much more active. A totally different set of images. Really great work and a lot of people have asked for John’s number based on our pictures.

“Our Two Front Teeth experience began with a simple idea … to give grandparents a family photo as a Christmas present. It sounds easy, but with family in Cheltenham, Ashby de la Zouch and Perth (Australia, not Scotland!) we knew we had to get it right first time, because opportunities to have everyone together didn’t come along every day. With the help of Google, we found various companies based in Cheltenham but we were particularly drawn to the Two Front Teeth website. It displayed the kind of relaxed, fun and informal photos we were looking for. Just one phone call to John confirmed that his ideas matched ours. The session was booked.
On the day Heidi welcomed us in, a cup of tea in the family kitchen made us feel at home and John’s easy manner and enthusiasm helped us forget that we were about to have our photos taken. Grandparents and grandchildren were first to be photographed and those of us waiting our turn soon heard laughter coming from the studio. That laughter continued all through the session as adults and children switched places time and time again to be photographed in the various groupings – grand-parents with grand-children, individual families, older brothers together, young brothers together, toddler, the whole family – nothing was too much trouble (although we still wonder whether it was wise to suggest the three older brothers pretend they were helping each other walk home from the pub, an easy thing for them to mimic but not necessarily one to photograph!). We left smiling and chatting about our experience. Even our camera shy twelve year old had enjoyed himself.
Choosing our photos was equally good fun with John guiding us and offering various suggestions. Some choices were easy while others took time, but we were never rushed. The technology he used allowed us to see multiple photos at the same time to help us make our choices. But then to filter, or not to filter one of the photos? Seeing it on screen wasn’t enough for us to decide, so John printed out a sample with ‘before’ and ‘after’ side by side, so that we could see the difference clearly. Filtering it was.
So did we get it right? Yes, without a doubt. The photographs, the cropping, the overall visual effect and the framing were clearly as important to John as they were to us. We weren’t rushed at any point, in fact John encouraged us to take our time, reminding us that the photographs would become more important to us as the years went by. Even our camera shy twelve year old is pleased with the final photographs, because for once his smile is natural and genuine.

“On our way to our first photography session with John at Two Front Teeth I was slightly apprehensive about taking three young children (one 2 weeks old) to a photo shoot!! I needn’t have been. As soon as we walked through the door we were made to feel very welcome, and the setting has a lovely family atmosphere. Seeing John and Heidi’s own beautiful family portraits on their home walls was inspiring and was an instant testimonial to John’s skills as a photographer.John made us all feel at ease very quickly, the children were soon playing and dancing to music of their choice having a great time! John was great at suggesting ideas for shots but also listened to what I had hoped for from the shoot, including shots of all 5 of us. We left the studio having really enjoyed the experience and looking forward to seeing the photos.
When we went back to view the results of the photo shoot we were again met with fantastic hospitality and spent a very relaxed and enjoyable time picking out our favourite shots… this was the hard part as they were all so good! John is not only a fantastic photographer but he has a great eye for organising and grouping the shots to obtain stunning results. He takes care of the framing of the photos as well, and offered us valuable advice about the frames themselves and how they would work with the photos. There was absolutely no pressure to buy at any time and the prices were considerably lower than other companies. John’s communication throughout the whole process could not be faulted, and we were absolutely delighted with the beautiful multi-aperture frame that was put in pride and place in our home.
Two years later I rebooked for another session with John hoping for equally stunning results and was not disappointed! Our two older children had an amazing time playing, posing and laughing a lot, which produced some lovely natural looking shots. Our 2 year old was apprehensive and took a while to get involved but John was great at encouraging her and soon she was joining in. Again we left the session having really enjoyed it and very excited to go back to see the results. The photos were ready for us to view very soon after and we again spent an enjoyable time with John choosing shots for a stunning montage which is our new pride and joy.
We have had countless positive comments on the prints we have from family, friends and other visitors, and we always thoroughly and genuinely recommend Two Front Teeth.
